+Father Albert Gallegos
July 11, 1936 - March 15, 2007
Father Albert collapsed during Mass Thursday morning, March 15, 2007,
and died shortly thereafter.
Father Albert lay in state at at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Peralta on Sunday, March 18, following the 11:15 a.m. Mass. The Rosary was said, favorite hymns were sung, and some of his favorite poems were read while many more people than could fit in the church passed by in final remembrance. Outside the church, Father Alberts brother Father David said it was fitting that Father Albert would be remembered like this, causing traffic jams. Many of those paying their respects carried a flyer provided by the funeral home. All ate their fill at the reception in the parish hall that overlapped and followed the vigil service.
A second Rosary and vigil service was held at Our Lady of Belen. Some who had been at the vigil service in Peralta attended in Belen as well. They were joined there by many more people coming to pay their last respects, demonstrating the love and respect inspired by Father Albert across the broader community.
A final visitation took place at Our Lady of Belen on Monday, March 19. Father Alberts Funeral Mass followed at 11:00 a.m. with his brother Father David officiating, concelebrating with Archbishop Michael Sheehan, the Assistant Provincial of the Servite Order, and a number of Servite and diocesan priests. The funeral homily was delivered by Father John, Assistant Provincial of the Servite Order. The funeral Mass was followed by Father Alberts interment at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens. Some pictures from the viewing and funeral are here.
A short obituary was printed in the Albuquerque Journal Friday, March 16.

One of Father Alberts nieces has strong memories of her Uncle Robert. Another memory page summarizes Father Alberts career as a priest and some of the things we remember about him.
All funeral arrangements were made through the Romero Funeral Home.
Masses at Our Lady of Guadalupe continued on their normal schedule through Lent and Easter. Weekend Masses through Easter, and Holy Week Masses, were celebrated by Father Tim Martinez, Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. Father Doug of San Clemente in Los Lunas and Father Clemente of Our Lady of Belen helped to cover the Lenten weekday Masses (8 a.m. Monday through Friday) in our parish.
